Kiwi cricket record-holder

Trisha McKelvey played 15 women’s Test matches for New Zealand. She captained the team in all of these games between 1966 and 1979.


Patricia "Trisha" Frances McKelvey MBE, CNZM, was born in 1942 in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. Her cricket career included Tests against not only traditional rivals England and Australia, but also against South Africa and India. She scored 699 Test runs at an average of 29.12, her highest score being a superb155 not out.

The three match tour series in South Africa of 1971-72 was the last official representative match played against any South African cricket team, men's or women's, for 18 years as teams boycotted South Africa because of the apartheid regime. Trish’s team won the series one-nil. Added to the Test matches were 15 one day internationals, in which she was also captain of the team. The results were seven wins, seven losses and one tie.

She has served on the Board of New Zealand Cricket.  She is a Life Member of both New Zealand Cricket and Cricket Wellington

Trisha has had a distinguished career in education. She trained as a physical education teacher and taught at Hutt Valley Memorial College, Solway College and Wellington High School at which she also served as principal from 1987 - 1994 when she retired. Since then she has served on the boards of several other educational bodies and institutions.

She served on the Council of the University of Victoria from 2003 - 2007, In February 2010 she was Chair of The Correspondence School Board of Trustees, a member of the Social Security Appeal Authority and a Director of Electra Limited. Trisha currently serves on the Boards of Barnados and Bowls New Zealand.

In recognition of her service to sport and to civic life, she has received and MBE and is a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
