The award wining McKelvey Vineyard

The proprietors are Peter and Denise McKelvey, along with their son James McKelvey who manages the vineyard in Pokolbin, Australia.

Denise & Peter bought their Vineyard 6 years ago as a retreat from the pressures of city life and also as a lifestyle for their son James who has embraced it with vigour tending the grapes with knowledge gained through practical viticulture an courses.

Denise & Peter have a candid way of describing their achievements. They say, “Like most follies it has grown into a business - exporting our wine as far away as Hong Kong. It keeps us busy as we still have an engineering business in Sydney in partnership with Peter’s brother John McKelvey.”

Lately the McKelvey vinyard has been winning medals for the quality of the wine. See web site below for further details.

McKelvey Estate Vineyard is situated on the undulating slopes below the Brokenback Ranges of the Hunter Valley in NSW, Australia.

Constant nurturing of the vines in alluvial and clay/loam soils over limestone, combined with climatic factors gives the McKelvey wine the distinctive “terroir” of the region.

As a family these McKelveys are dedicated to building a tradition of quality, integrity and care which is reflected in their premium wine.

They state their mission thus:
    •    To prepare the grape varieties with the latest technology and expertise available to attain the best quality possible, desired by the most discerning winemaker. (e.g. hand pruning for a low yield, high quality grape)
    •    To foster a mutual interest in success, not only personally, but of the region with grape purchasers/winemakers.
    •    To be totally professional in our approach to all aspects of viticulture.

History & Ownership
    •    The vineyard was originally planted in 1997/98 by David Lowe of Mudgee, an expert in his field. The different varietals were strategically planted on the terrain of the property to take full advantage of the different geographical aspects, e.g. Blocks 3 and 5 (Shiraz) were planted on the western facing slope to take advantage of the late afternoon filtered sunlight from the cloud cover drifting from the Barrington tops.

    •    The vineyard has drip irrigation throughout, fed by their own two extensive dams as well as their allocation from the Hunter River guarantees the vines are maintained throughout drought conditions.

Vineyard
    •    McKelvey Estate’s vineyard is centrally located in Pokolbin, having volcanic soils with limestone base with extensive plantings on western slopes. A total of 16.4 Hectares (41 Acres) of vines.
